Biography
Among the elite producers affiliated with the Cologne, Germany-based Kompakt label stands Olaf Dettinger. His ambient productions frequently immerse listeners in analog synth textures and expansive atmospherics, allowing him to evoke both serene euphoria and unsettling tension with equal skill. Dettinger claimed the distinction of issuing Kompakt’s inaugural single-artist LP when Intershop appeared in 1999, an album that arrived after the 1998 and early-1999 12-inch releases Blond and Puma. The year 2000 brought the Totentanz 12-inch together with his follow-up full-length Oasis, while a placement on Mille Plateaux’s glitch-focused Clicks + Cuts anthology further elevated his visibility. In June 2001 he joined Jonas Bering, Closer Musick, and Tobias Thomas—whose Kompakt mix Fur Dich included one of Dettinger’s pieces—as Kompakt representatives at the Mutek Festival in Montreal, Quebec. Strong contributions from the producer have also appeared on Pop Ambient 2001 and the first three Total compilations issued by Kompakt.
