Biography
The Deviates came together in their early days, with Brian handling vocals, Charley on guitar, Donnie behind the drums, and Damien on bass. Rejecting mainstream pop, the quartet pursued their own strain of punk rock. They began slamming guitars and pogoing in garages during 1994, then spent the following two years refining their energetic punk approach. A self-made demo tape circulated at shows throughout the South Bay area. Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge obtained a copy and, impressed by what he heard, took on production duties for the Deviates’ first album, My Life. Grateful for his input, the band tracked a more seasoned follow-up once the new millennium arrived. Time Is the Distance served as their official introduction on Brett Gurewitz’s Epitaph label during summer 2001.
