Biography
Hailing from Hamburg, Germany, the punk rock outfit Die Goldenen Zitronen established themselves as a major influence during the 1980s before shifting toward greater experimentation in later years. Their sound carries an anti-establishment edge, particularly early on, marked by both fury and biting wit. Themes of protest and ridicule frequently surface in the work of Die Goldenen Zitronen, occasionally positioned as forerunners to the Hamburg school—a claim the group dismissed outright via the 1998 album Dead School Hamburg (Give Me a Vollzeitarbeit). Schorsch Kamerun, Aldo Moro, Ted Gaier, and Ale Sexfeind launched the band, though Moro and Sexfeind eventually left; Julius Block, also known as Thomas Wenzel from Die Stern, along with Mense Reents and Enno Paluka, stepped in as replacements. Since their 1984 formation, initial singles like "Am Tag als Thomas Anders Starb" and notably "Für Immer Punk" drew notice, prompting early parallels to other German punk acts including Die Toten Hosen and Die Ärzte.
The first studio album from Die Goldenen Zitronen arrived in 1987 under the title Porsche, Genscher, Hallo HSV, later appearing as a 30-track CD edition packed with extras such as the Das Ist Rock mini-LP. Further albums followed: Kampfstern Mallorca Dockt An (1988), Fuck You (1990), Punkrock (1991), Das Bisschen Totschlag (1994), Economy Class (1996), Dead School Hamburg (Give Me a Vollzeitarbeit) (1998), and Schafott zum Fahrstuhl (2001). In 2002, the double-CD collection Aussage Gegen Aussage (1984-2002) appeared, concluding a period in which the group had risen among Germany's leading rock acts while evolving far beyond punk roots through increasingly bold musical and lyrical explorations. Additional material came with Fuck You Punkrock (2004), another double-CD compiling earlier releases. Several years passed without fresh output before the eagerly awaited Lenin (2006) emerged to strong acclaim. Outside the band, members like Kamerun and Gaier pursued other ventures such as Schorsch Kamerun, Schwabinggrad Ballett, and Motion.
