Biography
Domine emerged in Florence during 1983 as one of Italy’s foremost heavy metal outfits, coalescing around guitar-playing brothers Enrico Paoli and Riccardo Paoli. Drawing equal inspiration from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the hard-rock sound of the 1970s, the group issued four demo tapes across the span of 1986 to 1994, gradually earning recognition throughout the domestic metal underground. Once vocalist Morby and Mimmo Palmiotta—previously the drummer for Death SS—joined the ranks, the band delivered its debut full-length, Champion Eternal, in 1997. The record blended epic and power-metal approaches while its lyrics drew heavily on sword-and-sorcery authors, above all Michael Moorcock and, to a lesser extent, Robert E. Howard.
Keyboardist Riccardo Iacono arrived in September 1998, expanding the ensemble to a five-piece. The follow-up effort, Dragonlord (Tales Of The Noble Steel), appeared the next year; a licensing arrangement with Metal Blade subsequently placed the album in Japan, Brazil, Russia, and the United States, prompting an extensive European tour on which Domine supported Anvil, Riot, Iron Maiden, and Gamma Ray. Stefano Bonini, formerly of Necromass, replaced Palmiotta behind the kit for the 2001 release Stormbringer Rule—The Legend Of Power Supreme.
A more expansive vision surfaced on 2004’s Emperor Of The Black Runes, shifting the emphasis from concise metal tracks toward extended, sweeping pieces such as “The Aquilonia Suite,” which incorporated passages from the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack. That trajectory deepened further with Ancient Spirit Rising in 2007, a work that fused power metal with classical motifs, Celtic acoustic textures, and the progressive-rock sensibility of the 1970s.
