Australian producer and DJ Eugene Ward maintains Dro Carey among his numerous artistic identities. Perth native Ward, who now calls Sydney home, moves across an array of electronic styles that include garage, house, and grime. He issued his first recording, Venus Knock, on the Trilogy Tapes label while still attending high school. Drawing inspiration from Miles Davis, rappers Raekwon and GZA, plus electronic acts such as DJ Shadow, El-B, and Jeff Mills, Ward launched the Dro Carey series in 2011. The Journey with the Heavy EP came first, followed later that year and into 2012 by Much Coke and Night Raid; two further EPs arrived in 2014, Club Injury Handbook and Scope, the latter spotlighting Ward’s other persona, Tuff Sherm. Dark Zoo, a five-track collection issued on Soothsayer in 2016, contained “Queensberry Rules” with Kücka, “Grow Lithe,” and the title cut featuring FKL.
