Earl St. Clair first entered the music industry through hip-hop production before striking out independently as a soul singer. His deep, bluesy voice conveys the intense passion associated with classic Southern soul and gospel performers such as Al Green and Ray Charles, while modern swagger and production choices keep the material aligned with current rap, pop, and dance sounds. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he passed much of his childhood in Alabama, the state his father called home. He began tinkering with music production during college, then left school and moved back home, where he started creating beats for multiple Cleveland-based rappers. Those efforts eventually placed him on major-label albums by Machine Gun Kelly and Rick Ross in roles as producer or songwriter. His vocals also appeared on tracks by EDM titans David Guetta and Avicii, and he issued the duet “Perfect” with Bibi Bourelly. Def Jam released that song in 2016 and put out St. Clair’s solo singles “Man on Fire” and “Good Time” the same year, followed by “Feeling Alive” in early 2017. The final of those three singles was included on his debut EP, My Name Is Earl, which arrived that summer.
