Biography
Hailing from Washington, D.C., Kamau Mbonisi Kwame Agyeman answers to the labels of singer and rapper yet leans more toward vocalist because his approach values sonic textures equally with lyrical dexterity, pulling equally from African music, doo wop, and hip-hop. The beats and arrangements cradling his performances likewise resist tidy labels, mixing current pop and rap ingredients with echoes of Bobby McFerrin, Vieux Diop, André 3000, and k-os. Columbia’s 2015 release of No Wyld’s Ascension EP marked the first major project to feature Kamau’s work. In 2016 he placed “The Icarus” on The Birth of a Nation: The Inspired By Album, joined No Wyld’s full-length Nomads, issued several standalone singles, and delivered the six-track A Gorgeous Fortune EP. The full-length The KAMAU-CASSETTE: ŭRTH GōLD followed in 2017 and contained the tender single “MĭNT” featuring Talibah Safiya.
