In Williamstown, New Jersey, during 1975, Kenn Pierog on bass, Bill Drobile handling keyboards, and Greg DiDonato on drums established the band Earthrise. Their music, heavily featuring keyboards, drew inspiration from progressive rock ensembles with classical leanings, notably Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The self-titled first record came out in 1977 via the independent imprint Arceden, having been captured primarily through live studio takes. Limited to four hundred pressings, distribution occurred solely through nearby music retailers. By 1979 the trio had disbanded. Yet in subsequent decades, the recording gained recognition as an overlooked gem, with copies commanding sums nearing one thousand dollars. Responding to interest in additional output, the musicians reconvened during 1998 for the purpose of producing another version featuring identical compositions.
