El Gato emerged as a psychedelic pop/rock group in Denton, Texas, during the spring of 1995, centered on the talents of John Burgmeier handling guitar and keyboards, Kevin Dotolo on drums and percussion, Evan Hisey managing bass and keyboards, plus John Vineyard providing guitar and vocals. Their music quickly drew attention from established Texas bands including Baboon, Tripping Daisy, and HiFi Drowning, leading to numerous shared performances on stage. The self-released 7-inch single Escape Artist/Ambulance marked their debut recording and boosted visibility within the vibrant north Texas underground community toward the end of the decade, enabling further tours alongside funding for the subsequent Everybody's a Piñata EP. That EP appeared in June 1998, earning notable media coverage such as recognition in CMJ alongside placement on Alternative Press's college radio chart. Following promotional tours throughout 1999 and the initial months of 2000, the group opted for a hiatus to concentrate on composing and tracking material for their debut full-length album.
