Established in Spain during the opening years of the 1990s, the experimental rock group Lagartija Nick originated with vocalist and bassist Antonio Arias, guitarists Miguel Angel Pareja and Juan Codorniu, along with drummer Erick Jiménez at its core. In 1991 the ensemble laid down tracks for its first full-length release, Hipnosis, which also enabled them to take part in New York's New Music Seminar during that period. Following their agreement with Sony Music, the album Inercia emerged in 1992 under the production guidance of Owen Davies. A major step forward occurred for Lagartija Nick in 1996 upon the appearance of Omega, a project drawing from the words of Federico García Lorca and featuring collaboration with flamenco troubadour Enrique Morente. Once guitarists Miguel Angel Pareja and Juan Codorniu opted to depart, ex-King Changó guitarist Paco Luque stepped in to fill the vacancy. Drummer David Fernández subsequently assumed the position previously held by Erick Jiménez.
