El General

Born Edgardo A. Franco in Panama, El General launched his musical journey by writing and performing songs at age 12 in his hometown of Rio Abajo. A scholarship later took the aspiring performer to the United States for studies in business administration, a path that led him to qualify as a professional accountant. Music nevertheless remained his true calling, prompting him to launch a performing career. His earliest release, the single “Tu Pum Pum,” was quickly followed by the debut album Estas Buena and its popular track “Te Ves Buena.” The 1991 project Muevelo Con el General opened doors for extensive touring across Latin America. The following year, his infectious track “Muevelo”—a fusion of Latin rap and Jamaican reggae—earned an MTV award for Best Latin Video. El Poder Del General, issued in 1993, introduced another success for the artist, the merengue single “Caramelo.”
