Grindcore unit Escuela Grind focuses on brief, ferocious tracks delivered with unrelenting force. The group first assembled in Upstate New York, cultivating an ethos centered on acceptance and inclusivity even as their sound remained ferocious and severe. That same stance has carried over into their chaotic live shows and recordings such as Indoctrination (2020) and Memory Theater (2022), the latter issued via the MNRK Heavy imprint. Their opening release of 2024 arrived in the form of the EP DDEEAATTHHMMEETTAALL.

Although drawn from scattered regions across the United States, Escuela Grind traces its roots to Upstate New York and has stayed anchored near Pittsfield, Massachusetts since coalescing in the late 2010s. Katerina Economou on vocals, guitarist Jason Balthazar Eldridge, bassist Krissy Morash, and drummer Jesse Fuentes came together intent on injecting inclusivity into a grindcore landscape often viewed as inflexible. They made it a priority to appear on bills mixing genres that spanned rap and bedroom pop to harsh noise and gore. After building recognition throughout the Northeast under the name Escuela, they adopted Escuela Grind and issued the self-released PPOOWWEERRVVIIOOLLEENNCCEE EP in early 2020, with the full-length Indoctrination following several months afterward. GGRRIINNDDCCOORREE, another EP, rounded out the calendar.

The band’s ferocious blend of hardcore, thrash, and grind resonated widely, prompting a deal with MNRK Music Group’s Heavy division after the independent 2021 single “That Which Does Not Bend Must Break.” The imprint put out the well-received Memory Theater in 2022. By then the group had expanded its touring reach to include European dates. Late in 2023 they began previewing a third EP in their patterned series by unveiling the sludgy “Ball and Chain,” which surfaced on DDEEAATTHHMMEETTAALL the following year.
