Biography
Based in Brooklyn, New York City, the multimedia outfit Fall on Your Sword was founded by English natives Will Bates and Phil Mossman. Bates contributed saxophone to sessions with Paul McCartney, joined forces in the studio with jazz figure Roy Ayers and house pioneer Marshall Jefferson, and issued an album alongside Electric Six frontman Dick Valentine under the Evil Cowards name. Mossman logged considerable time as a studio associate alongside David Holmes and belonged to LCD Soundsystem’s original lineup. The pair first drew widespread attention through their music for a Nomis football boots advertisement that earned a Gold Clio Award along with a Gold Lion at Cannes; the track they created for the spot, “Damn Boots,” appeared as a single in 2008. While sustaining commercial assignments, the duo also turned out comedic short-form videos and moved into film scoring, beginning with Kitao Sakurai’s Aardvark. Their soundtrack for Mike Cahill’s 2011 feature Another Earth came out on Milan, and extended versions of the pieces “The First Time I Saw Jupiter” and “Rhoda’s Theme” were pressed as a 12-inch single on DFA, the imprint run by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy.
