Biography
California's Fana Hues crafts sparse, rhythm-centered pop that shifts fluidly across sultry R&B, rock, psychedelia, and hip-hop. A vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose background spans varied musical settings, she first performed with relatives in their family ensemble and later joined national tours of a theatrical production built around song before issuing her solo debut, the 2021 album Hues. After linking with Tyler, The Creator and THEY., she issued her second full-length, Flora + Fana, in 2022. That singular mixture kept developing on "Paper Tigers" and "Moth," both drawn from her 2024 album Moth.
Born and raised in Pasadena inside an expansive musical household, Fana Hughes endured a severe childhood illness combining scarlet fever, tonsillitis, and strep throat that silenced her for five years. Sustained rehearsal and the encouragement of her tightly bonded relatives helped restore her voice, leading her to sing and play within the family band, take the lead in a high-school staging of The Wiz, and travel nationwide in a theatrical revue devoted to Elvis Presley's catalog.
Also a multi-instrumentalist particularly adept on bass, Hughes began writing and tracking material in her early twenties, guided by influences such as Anita Baker, Nina Simone, Tracy Chapman, and Mary J. Blige. Under the name Fana Hues she joined the Bright Antenna roster and appeared in 2020 with the atmospheric single "Notice Me." Further cuts, including the retro-psych-soul track "Icarus," drew critical notice and mentions from Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, The Creator. At the close of 2021 she released her introductory ten-song set, simply titled Hues. The 2022 collaboration "Comfortable" paired her with Los Angeles' THEY. That same year she returned with the atmospherically dreamy Flora + Fana, which spotlighted the single "Breakfast." Her only 2023 release was a feature alongside Savannah Ré on DJ Rosegold's "Passion," after which she prepared her next album. Her characteristically wide-ranging style surfaced on advance singles such as the psychedelic soul of "Paper Tigers" and the lush dance cut "Rental," both featured on Moth, which arrived in June 2024.
