Following a lengthy absence after Carcass issued Swan Song in 1996, founding guitarist Bill Steer resurfaces in late 2000 by launching Firebird and issuing the trio’s self-titled debut album. Previously celebrated for his trailblazing role in grindcore and extreme metal, Steer pursues an alternate path with Firebird, a blues-rooted three-piece steeped in the sounds of late-’60s and early-’70s rock. Bass duties fall to Leo Smee of sludge-rock outfit Cathedral, while drummer Ludwig Witt of Spiritual Beggars, who appeared on the debut recording, yields the drum chair to Tom Berman after struggling to maintain commitments to two separate bands. Steer additionally assumes lead vocals, showcasing a vocal facility that aligns seamlessly with Firebird’s jam-rock aspirations.
