Biography
Frances Cone operates as a Nashville-based indie pop outfit fronted by Christina Cone on vocals, songwriting, and piano alongside Andrew Doherty, who handles bass and vocals. What began as Cone’s solitary effort produced a full-length album in 2013; several years afterward the pair united and shaped a reflective, cinematic aesthetic that fuses atmospheric pop textures with earthy, soul-inflected folk, a style showcased on the 2019 release Late Riser.
Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Cone traces her musical roots to her father, grandmother, and great-grandfather. After relocating to Brooklyn, New York, she adopted the Frances Cone moniker and issued her first solo album, Come Back, in 2013. That collection of dreamy indie pop laced with electronic and soulful folk elements drew early listeners, a reception further amplified by the self-titled 2014 EP that attracted broader national attention. Despite working with assorted collaborators in those initial years, the project essentially remained Cone’s alone.
After issuing a pair of additional independent singles, she connected with fellow Brooklyn musician Andrew Doherty, who became both creative and romantic partner. Reframing Frances Cone as a duo, they started composing and tracking material together before relocating to Nashville. Their inaugural joint single, “Arizona,” surfaced in 2016, generating substantial streaming numbers and generating anticipation for a subsequent album. A follow-up single, the lush “Leave Without You,” arrived in 2017, preceding the duo’s second full-length, Late Riser, which emerged in early 2019.
