Jose Raul Gonzalez entered the world in March 1974 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, yet reggaeton audiences everywhere came to know him by the name Gallego. He first experimented with melody while showering, then carried those vocals onto public buses for impromptu audiences. During adolescence he kept performing for personal amusement amid a culture that places high value on musical expression. A 1989 visit to Nueva York exposed him to local Puerto Rican poets, igniting a lasting fascination with verse and linguistic force. While enrolled at the University of Puerto Rico he helped launch “La Marilla,” an initiative uniting emerging Puerto Rican authors. That same devotion to written and oral language prompted frequent readings in bars and dedicated poetry venues, which in turn brought invitations to perform in Santo Domingo, Havanna, Paris, and New York’s Nuyorrican Poet’s Café. His debut book, Barrunto, appeared in 2000 and collected several national honors along with praise from the broader Latino literary sphere; the volume later entered course syllabi at universities across the United States and Puerto Rico. The combination of youth and growing esteem opened doors to partnerships with poets outside academic circles, among them Puerto Rican superstars Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Eddie Dee, and others. Adopting the MC moniker Gallego, Gonzalez accepted an offer from Machete Music for his first album, allowing his musical and literary passions to converge on the 2007 project Teatro del Barrio. Its standout track “Mulata” positioned Gallego as reggaeton’s next fearless innovator.
