New York's Geryon originated as a side project from the Krallice rhythm section, with Nicholas McMaster handling bass and vocals alongside drummer Lev Weinstein. Their sound merges avant, progressive, and technical death metal elements, yet omits guitars entirely. Prior to their time in Krallice, the two musicians had already collaborated in Chicago's Astomatous as well as several other groups, developing the harsh sonic identity that defines their work. The project's first release arrived in 2012 as a split live cassette alongside M.N.D.L.S.B.L.S.T.N.G., a duo that includes Krallice guitarist Mick Barr and Bay Area composer Nondor Nevaï. Gilead Media put out their self-titled mini-album the next year. After touring in support, the pair returned to their primary band commitments. In 2015 they resumed recording, enlisting fellow Krallice member Colin Martson to produce. Additional electronics came from guests Jim Mroz, Nick Podgurski, Chris Latina, and Marston. February saw the online premiere of the track "Silent Command," soon followed by the title song "The Wound and the Bow." Profound Lore issued the complete album that April.
