Gigi Perez, performing under the name gigi, delivers earnest indie folk-rock marked by a brooding yet resolute tone that aligns with contemporaries such as Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. Her acoustic self-released debut single “Sometimes (Backwood)” climbed directly to the summit of streaming rankings in 2021, after which her major-label debut EP, How to Catch a Falling Knife, arrived in 2023 and expanded her palette through acoustic guitar, atmospheric synths, and full-band indie rock textures. The 2024 single “Sailor Song” then propelled her into mainstream visibility, becoming an international chart success.
Although born in New Jersey, Perez grew up primarily in Florida before establishing her career from Brooklyn. In the first months of 2021 she posted a portion of the ethereal acoustic track “Sometimes (Backwood)” on TikTok; the complete self-released recording quickly amassed tens of millions of streams.
