Biography
Australian indie outfit Girl and Girl deliver a passionate yet humorously wry strain of hooky guitar rock shaped by '70s post-punk. After generating early interest with several EPs, the quartet joined Sub Pop and issued their first full-length album, Call a Doctor, in 2024.
The band came together in 2020 on Queensland's Gold Coast, where singer/guitarist Kai James, guitarist Jayden Wiliams, bassist Fraser Bell, and drummer Melissa James—known as Aunt Liss—began working as a unit. Initial rehearsals took place in Kai's family garage, with Wiliams' brother Coby James handling bass duties at the outset. Melissa, Kai's aunt and a musician with more than three decades of experience, sat in casually at first yet soon committed full time. Their earliest release, the 2020 single "Ocean Song," was followed in 2021 by "Shame It's Not Now" and the EP A Typical Friday Night (Shame, Sex and Misery). Two further EPs appeared: Divorce in 2022 and Fight Night in 2023. Around the latter year, Wiliams departed and Bell took over on bass.
