Biography
Owen Holmes, bassist for Black Kids, launched Gospel Music as his lo-fi twee pop side venture. Eschewing both the sleek, fashionable tone of his primary band and any assumptions the name might provoke, the project supplies endearingly makeshift songs akin to the Moldy Peaches and voiced in Holmes’ flat, Calvin Johnson-like delivery. It first appeared in fall 2010 via the EP Duettes, a set of quick-burst tracks written expressly for two singers and featuring guest appearances by Darren Hayman (Hefner), Shirley Simms (Magnetic Fields), and Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls). The following autumn, Kill Rock Stars issued the outfit’s debut full-length, How to Get to Heaven from Jacksonville, FL.
