Grace Ives, a New York resident, constructs concise electro-pop pieces that feature insistent melodies, dense layers of vocal harmonies, and lyrics addressing weighty topics as well as routine stresses. Earlier releases marked by looser recording quality gave way to elevated production on her 2022 album Janky Star.

Born in New York, Ives spent her childhood in Brooklyn’s Gowanus section. While attending college she started creating electronic music even though her circle of friends and groups focused on D.I.Y. punk and guitar-centered indie rock. She regularly opened for those acts and slowly drew supporters to her synth pop material shaped by 2000s R&B and millennial pop. A series of self-released online tracks culminated in the lo-fi EP Really Hot from 2016. In 2019 she released 2nd, a compact album of rapid songs exploring parties, self-examination, relationships, and assorted fleeting reflections. Janky Star extended her increasingly refined songwriting while broadening its sonic and emotional scope through work with Justin Raisen, the Charli XCX producer. Ives and Raisen shared production credits on Janky Star, which drew immediate critical acclaim.
