Biography
Norwegian producer, singer, and songwriter Kai Gundelach crafts evocative electro-pop under the Gundelach name, pulling from 1980s synth-pop alongside R&B of the 2010s. Raised in Bærum near Oslo, he joined a children's theater ensemble, took up guitar at age ten, and absorbed sounds stretching from black metal to hip-hop. During adolescence he developed a passion for dance music, beginning to DJ at seventeen. He also started composing original material around then, though he kept the tracks private for several years afterward. Gundelach eventually shared a demo of "Alone in the Night" with his manager, who introduced him to producer Joel Ford; the two collaborated on the track, which appeared as a Scandinavian single in 2015. They continued their partnership on the official debut single "Spiders" and the self-titled EP, both issued in 2016. The next year brought the single "Holy Water," drawn from a demo Gundelach had cut inside an abandoned film studio. He revisited additional earlier compositions to shape his debut full-length, Baltus. That album, released by Terrible Records in 2018, included the singles "Control" and "Duck Hunting" plus guest appearances by Norwegian singer and producer Ary.
