In 2003 the quartet that later became Hail the Villain assembled in Ontario, Canada under the name Farenheit. With Bryan Crouch handling vocals, Chad Taylor on bass, Drew Dockrill behind the drums, and Joseph Stamp on guitar, the group specialized in propulsive hard rock that echoed the approach of Sevendust and Velvet Revolver. While still operating as Farenheit they issued a self-titled EP together with the full-length album Disconnected in 2005. The next year they adopted the name Hail the Villain and adjusted their sound to something darker and heavier in keeping with the new, more foreboding identity. Before entering the studio to document material under that revised banner they toured with Sevendust and Stone Sour. Their first album as Hail the Villain, Population: Declining, appeared on Roadrunner Records in 2010.
