Harriet Brown functions as a producer, guitarist, singer, and songwriter who frames his impassioned '80s-flavored R&B under the heading of romantic funk. After growing up in the Bay Area he later established himself in Los Angeles, where he introduced his work on the Feel So Real label in 2014 through the five-track New Era. The release projected the visual aura of 1987 while delivering retro-futuristic machine soul laced with vintage Japanese art-pop touches, howling falsetto vocals, and scorching guitar solos. The following year the EP track "Stop Think" appeared as a digital maxi-single carrying remixes by four artists, among them Suzanne Kraft. Brown’s next substantial project, the album Contact, arrived on Innovative Leisure in 2017. By that stage he had already contributed to recordings by the Bilinda Butchers ("Heaven Holds a Place"), Classixx ("Eyes on Me"), and AR Ferdinand ("As You Wish"). Across several months spanning 2017 and 2018 he tracked a second album at his home studio with minimal outside input. Issued in 2019, Mall of Fortune widened his range of reference points to encompass the synthetic pop-R&B of early-2000s Neptunes productions.
