During the 2000s, Disney achieved one of its biggest triumphs through the High School Musical series, which not only dominated viewership on the Disney Channel but also propelled a wave of teen pop acts onto the scene comparable to the roster that emerged from The Mickey Mouse Club during the previous decade, featuring the likes of Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake. Zac Efron portrayed Troy Bolton, the basketball team leader who uncovers a love for performing vocally, while Vanessa Hudgens played Gabriella Montez, the newcomer to the area; Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel took on the roles of Sharpay and Ryan Evans, the school's prominent musical theater talents; Corbin Bleu appeared as Chad; and Monique Coleman embodied Taylor. Early in 2006, the initial High School Musical premiered on the Disney Channel, rapidly turning into a major sensation that delivered robust television audiences alongside robust album and single performance on the charts. Capitalizing on this momentum, Disney facilitated solo album releases from several of the fresh talents, among them Vanessa Hudgens' V and Ashley Tisdale's Headstrong, while the craze further extended to High School Musical: The Concert. Summer 2007 brought High School Musical 2, whose film and accompanying soundtrack ranked among the year's standout pop culture items. The third installment of the series, complete with its soundtrack, arrived in 2008, with the compilation High School Musical: The Collection following in 2009.
