Biography
Honeyglaze crafts an eccentric strain of indie rock laced with post-punk edges, drawing on jazz, classic soul, and '90s dream pop as key reference points. The project centers on singer-songwriter Anouska Sokolow, who gathered the band in South London in 2020 around her existing material. After joining the Speedy Wunderground roster, the group issued its first album, Honeyglaze, in 2022. The follow-up, Real Deal, arrived in 2024 and was tracked live inside the studio, bringing a brooding atmosphere while folding in Midwest emo, math rock, and further shades to the band's restless indie approach.
Anouska Sokolow started Honeyglaze specifically to sidestep a solo residency at The Windmill, the Brixton pub and music venue that had emerged as a focal point for the South London post-punk revival. Bassist Tim Curtis and drummer Yuri Shibuichi met her only at their opening rehearsal, scheduled three days ahead of the first gig. The COVID-19 pandemic then closed venues, pushing the band to resume activity a full year later with a run of shows that included slots at Green Man, Live at Leeds, and Sŵn Festival. In the interim they signed to Speedy Wunderground and cut their debut album in April 2021, with label head Dan Carey and Alexis Smith handling production. The Charles Bukowski-inspired single "Burglar" surfaced first in September 2021, followed by the full-length Honeyglaze the next April and an accompanying tour of the U.K. and Ireland.
On the second album the band, now more cohesive, extended the eclectic range of their debut by weaving in math rock and Midwest emo while citing Pinback and American Football among the influences that shaped the sessions, alongside Warpaint, Scott Walker, the Zombies, and Ought. Grammy-nominated producer Claudius Mittendorfer, known for work with Ash and White Lies, captured the sessions live in the studio, resulting in the discontented Real Deal, which Fat Possum Records released in September 2024.
