Hot Lunch came together in San Francisco during 2010, shortly after the dissolution of the hard rock quartet Parchman Farm, the earlier project fronted by singer and bandleader Eric Shea. A longtime presence on the Bay Area’s rock and punk circuit who also skates, Shea treated the breakup as a chance to assemble a fresh group from friends he had long hoped to work with. Bound by a shared passion for riff-driven acts such as Blue Cheer and UFO, along with a collective enthusiasm for skate culture, Shea drew his collaborators from other local outfits that matched this sensibility. The lineup was completed by guitarist Aaron Nudelman of Men’s Club, bassist Charlie Karr of Harold Ray Live in Concert, and drummer Rob Alper of SLA and the Fells. The quartet refined a heavy punk ’n’ roll approach through regular shows alongside similar skate-rooted bands, eventually attracting the interest of New York’s Tee Pee Records, which issued the band’s self-titled debut album in 2013.
