The Griffiths brothers Tom and Ian launched Icarus as a Bristol-based duo in 2013. Their output fuses deep house, U.K. garage, progressive house, and further strands into bright, tuneful pieces. Drawing from Basement Jaxx, the Chemical Brothers, LTJ Bukem, and Hans Zimmer, the pair aim for eclectic results that avoid simple genre slots. They favor melodic, progressive material rather than standard club loops and have produced remixes for major acts while embedding vocals and song frameworks in their own work. The duo joined Pete Tong’s FFRR label in 2014 and issued widely streamed cuts such as 2016’s “October” and 2019’s “Sirens” before unveiling their debut album Unfold in 2020.

Digital releases began soon after formation and quickly earned BBC Radio 1Xtra rotation plus interest from Skrillex, who released the Steal the Sun EP on the Nest sublabel of OWSLA that October. Icarus also reworked Bastille’s “Of the Night” the same year. In 2014 they supplied remixes for OWSLA artist Phonat and French producer Watermät while placing material on SubSoul and their own Fly Boy imprint, closing the year with a Parlophone/FFRR deal. The soulful singles “Don't Cry Wolf” and “Ride This Train” followed in 2015. After gaining traction through blogs, clubs, airplay from Pete Tong and Annie Mac, festival slots, and a U.K. tour, the duo dropped “Home” featuring Norwegian vocalist Aurora in early 2016. Further 2016 releases comprised “October” and the Anjunadeep one-off “Hiding.” Catalog growth continued with “Trouble” featuring Talay Riley plus the EPs In the Dark in 2018 and This Must Be the Place in 2019. Debut full-length Unfold arrived in 2020 with guest vocalists Rae Morris, Nathan Bell, and Tim Digby-Bell.
