Chicago's Immortal Bird forged an intense fusion of progressive metal, grind, hardcore, and blackened crust after coming together in 2013. Their profile expanded rapidly through the progression that took place between the Akrasia EP in 2014 and the 2019 album Thrive on Neglect, moving them from basement and club performances to headlining slots on major festival stages. Kerrang placed the group on its 2019 hotlist of the fifty most significant metal bands from the previous ten years.

Rae Amitay, formerly of Woods of Ypres, and studio guitarist and arranger Evan Berry launched Immortal Bird initially as a songwriting endeavor. Bassist John Picillo joined soon afterward, leading to the recording of the Akrasia EP, which appeared in December and earned strong early notice from Decibel. With Eric Kornfein handling guitar duties in live settings, the band played numerous local underground shows and secured support positions on national tours alongside Mortals, Krieg, and Occultist. They also performed at Southern Darkness Fest in late summer 2014, sharing the bill with Pelican and Bongripper among others.

Early the following year Immortal Bird tracked their first full-length, Empress/Abscess, at Colin Marston's studio, with the Dysrhythmia and Gorguts member serving as producer. The track "Neoplastic" surfaced as a Decibel flexi-disc and included guest vocals from Weekend Nachos' John Hoffman. Amitay shifted permanently to frontwoman while Novembers Doom's Garry Naples took over drums both in the studio and on the road. Following the August release, the band embarked on a West Coast tour capped by a main-stage appearance at Southwest Terrorfest. Once that cycle concluded, Naples returned to Novembers Doom and Matt Korajczyk was installed as the permanent drummer. Evan Berry departed, Kornfein's live role ended, and Nate Madden of Roman Ring stepped in as the steady guitarist.

With the lineup stabilized, Immortal Bird spent 2017 and 2018 routing across the United States, Canada, and Western Europe for co-headlining dates and festival appearances. After a period devoted to writing and rest, the band announced a deal with 20 Buck Spin. They then recorded at Dave Otero's Flatline Studio in Denver. The advance track "Vestigial Warnings" surfaced in May, preceding the July arrival of Thrive on Neglect.
