Biography
A songwriter with an instinctive gift for crafting melodies and ideas that seem effortless on the surface, Jake Troth spent the mid-2010s penning and producing material for artists including Kehlani, Big Boi, Lizzo, and Sia before launching his own path as a folk-pop performer. After inking a deal with Atlantic, he issued his first album, the Dave Cobb-helmed It Is as If, in 2019.
Born in Davidson, North Carolina, Troth devoted several years to fashion studies at Savannah College of Art and Design until music took precedence. While issuing independent EPs from time to time, he established himself as a producer and songwriter in Los Angeles. Though his personal output leaned toward smart guitar pop, his adaptability enabled him to work successfully with mainstream pop and urban acts. He co-wrote and produced Big Boi’s “Apple of My Eye” in 2013, then appeared with the rapper on Late Night with David Letterman to play the track live. Not long afterward he secured his Atlantic contract, putting out solo singles along with the short film Double Black Diamond, even as his most prominent collaborative work lay ahead. Further notable contributions arrived for Kehlani, Lizzo, and Kevin Gates before he completed his major-label debut. Cut in Nashville under Dave Cobb’s direction, It Is as If arrived in late 2019 and centered on refined, minimal folk-pop arrangements marked by a warmly romantic tone.
