Florida-based vocal duo Alex & Sierra, consisting of Alex Kinsey and Sierra Deaton, craft romantic acoustic folk-pop. They first came together in 2009 and gained their widest recognition by claiming victory on season three of Fox’s singing competition The X Factor. Kinsey, born in 1991, spent his formative years in Smyrna Beach, Florida, picking up the guitar during his teenage years. Deaton, also born in 1991 and originally from Philadelphia, grew up in Orlando, Florida, where she began dance training at age two. Although the pair had crossed paths in high school, they did not begin making music together until reconnecting as students at the University of Southern Florida. There they found a mutual creative spark that soon deepened into a romantic relationship, prompting them to post videos of cover songs online starting in 2009. In 2013 they tried out for the third season of The X Factor, performing a slow, sultry reinterpretation of Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” Throughout the competition they remained audience favorites, consistently earning the largest share of viewer votes. After taking the title in December 2013, they set about writing and tracking their first album, enlisting producers Claude Kelly, Sam Hollander, and Steve Mac along with additional collaborators that included singer-songwriter Jason Mraz. The resulting debut full-length, It’s About Us, arrived in 2014 and spawned the singles “Scarecrow” and “Just Kids.” Following a guest appearance on an album by British electronic producer Gareth Emery, Alex & Sierra returned in March 2016 with the EP As Seen on TV. The set blended previously televised covers with several newly written originals.
