Biography
John Rich first gained widespread recognition as one half of the chart-topping country-rock duo Big & Rich, yet he also carved out a profitable path as a solo artist. Active since the early 1990s, he served as lead vocalist for the country hitmakers Lonestar across multiple years and then delivered his initial solo outing, the 2001 release Rescue Me. In 2003 he joined forces with Big Kenny to establish Big & Rich; the pair issued four albums, placed fifteen singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and paused activities in 2007. Rich resumed solo work in 2009 via Son of a Preacher Man and followed it with the 2011 EPs Rich Rocks and For the Kids. After the duo’s Gravity and Did It for the Party both reached the Top Ten on the Country Albums chart, he again focused on solo material, issuing a series of conservative political anthems such as the 2019 track “Shut Up About Politics,” 2023’s “I’m Offended,” and 2024’s “Revelation.”
Born in Amarillo, Texas, the singer/songwriter experienced his earliest Nashville breakthrough as Lonestar’s frontman. He departed the group under strained circumstances following their second album and entered the studio to record independently. The project Underneath the Same Moon, which included guest appearances by Sara Evans, the Fairfield Four, and Delbert McClinton together with future Big & Rich collaborator Kenny Alphin (aka Big Kenny), was completed yet ultimately shelved in 1998. During the same period Big Kenny completed his own solo effort, Live a Little, which likewise remained unreleased. Lacking an outlet for either record, the two writers concentrated on Big & Rich, who rose to prominence as a country duo throughout the 2000s.
Renewed attention stemming from Rich’s later success with Alphin led BNA Records to issue Underneath the Same Moon officially in March 2006. Over the next twelve months Rich hosted the reality series Gone Country while also touring behind Big & Rich’s third studio album. He simultaneously advanced his solo catalog with the restrained Son of a Preacher Man, his second solo album, which appeared in early 2009. Once that project was complete, he issued the single “Country Done Come to Town” ahead of the more aggressive, celebratory tone heard on the 2011 EPs Rich Rocks and For the Kids, both of which evoked the duo’s formative sound.
Rich rejoined Big Kenny for the 2012 album Hillbilly Jedi, which fulfilled their Warner Bros. Nashville agreement. The pair subsequently founded Big & Rich Records and used the imprint for their fifth album, 2014’s Gravity, and the 2017 follow-up Did It for the Party; both titles entered the top ten of the Country Albums chart.
Nearly a decade after his previous solo single, Rich returned in 2019 with “Shut Up About Politics,” co-written with right-wing pundit Greg Gutfeld and featuring vocal contributions from members of “The Five,” the conservative panel featured on the Fox program of the same name. Additional singles “Rebel Wings (Song for Nick)” and “Earth to God” surfaced in 2020. His sequence of politically oriented statements continued with 2022’s “Progress,” 2023’s “I’m Offended,” and 2024’s “Revelation” alongside Sonya Isaacs.
