Biography
Originating from California, Joy Enriquez brings a voice rooted in soulful pop and contemporary Christian music, colored by Latin and R&B textures. Growing up in Whittier, she stepped onto stages at an early age. During her teenage years she enrolled at Orange County Performing Arts High School and spent evenings and weekends singing in neighborhood clubs to build stage presence and poise. Her breakthrough arrived in 1995 when, at fifteen, producers chose her for the long-running program Star Search; she captured the female vocalist title on eleven consecutive episodes. Major labels soon extended contracts, and after careful consideration she chose Arista Records.
During the closing years of the decade she supplied backing vocals for Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston’s “When You Believe,” recorded for the film Prince of Egypt, and contributed the track “How Could I Not Love You” to the Anna and the King soundtrack, earning the song two Golden Globe nominations. In 2001 she issued her self-titled debut album, whose lead single “Tell Me How You Feel” was shaped by Babyface, Soulshock, Kenneth Karlin, and additional producers; further singles included “Losing the Love,” “Someday,” and “Shake Up the Party.” A few years afterward she married producer and songwriter Rodney Jerkins and began raising a family.
After the wedding, with a second album already largely finished, Enriquez experienced an artistic and spiritual shift that steered her from mainstream R&B toward faith-centered contemporary Christian pop. She documented the evolution on her 2006 independent release Atmosphere of Heaven, issued through her own JoyfulChild imprint. In the years that followed she placed original songs on multiple film and television projects, among them “Boom Chika Boom” for Our Family Wedding and “Beatz Be Rockin’” for Nickelodeon’s iCarly. She also appeared as the central figure in the NuvoTV reality series House of Joy and supplied a companion EP in 2013. Her third studio album, The Call, arrived in 2016; again produced by her husband Rodney Jerkins, it featured guest contributions from Heavenly Joy, Kirk Franklin, and Lindsey Sterling.
