Based in San Francisco, house music DJ and producer Justin Martin creates tracks and remixes noted for their lean form, precise melodies, and playful edge. His recording career began with the 2003 single "The Sad Piano." Issued on Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly label, spun by Derrick Carter and Pete Tong, and picked up for licensing by Steve Bug, the release launched his output on a strong note. Further singles appeared on Buzzin' Fly and Utensil before Martin and Claude VonStroke established the Dirtybird label, which became a home for their solo work, Martin's joint projects with Christian Martin under the Martin Brothers name, and material from artists including Ardalan. Dirtybird issued Martin's debut album Ghettos & Gardens in 2012, featuring fresh productions, several remixes, and a "remake" of Goldie's "Kemistry." The label followed with the more collaborative Hello Clouds in 2016, which later reached Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
