Emerging in 2011 from Rochester, New York, the indie electronic outfit KOPPS shared stylistic territory with local peers Joywave. Fronted by singer and percussionist Patricia Patrón, the lineup also features keyboardist and guitarist Kyle O'Hara, bassist Travis Johansen, and drummer Andrew York. Their early single “L.A. Lights” received a 2012 remix from Joywave that inaugurated ongoing partnerships, soon leading Joywave to guest on “Morning Sex” from KOPPS’ debut EP Fuck Jams that same year. In 2013 KOPPS appeared on Joywave’s track “Tongues” while issuing a self-titled EP that leaned further into aggressive electro-inflected indie rock; one highlight was the Daniel Armbruster-produced “Dumb,” whose minimalist, one-word hook quickly spread online. That song later surfaced on the 2015 EP The Sounds of Music, released via Cultco Sound. Additional singles followed, among them the seasonal number “Is This Christmas?” and “Baby I’m Dead Inside,” before Joywave rejoined KOPPS on “Hott,” which arrived in early 2018.
