Biography
Though he stands among the most storied yet seldom-documented voices in New York rap, Kurious draws steady admiration from committed hip-hop listeners for his incisive wordplay and playful delivery. Linked early on to Golden Age acts such as the Beatnuts, 3rd Bass, KMD, and Hieroglyphics, he issued his first full-length project, the major-label A Constipated Monkey, in 1994. Critical praise and underground respect followed, yet Kurious largely withdrew from view, surfacing only on scattered MF Doom-related projects and as a member of the supergroup Monsta Island Czars. He reemerged with II in 2009 and has issued material at a steadier pace since, delivering three albums across the 2020s, among them 2024’s Majician.
Born Jorge Antonio Alvarez to parents of Puerto Rican and Cuban heritage, he was raised on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Recording as Kurious, or Kurious Jorge, he belonged to the Constipated Monkeys, an uptown collective of MCs, DJs, and graffiti writers that counted KMD members among its ranks. After a short stint at Def Jam, he chose to sign with Hoppoh Recordings, the Columbia-affiliated label operated by Pete Nice of 3rd Bass and Rock Steady Crew’s Bobbito Garcia. Kurious dropped the Beatnuts-produced single “Walk Like a Duck” in 1992, guested on Prime Minister Pete Nice & Daddy Rich and Del tha Funkee Homosapien albums in 1993, and at last released the long-gestating A Constipated Monkey in 1994. That effort, shaped by the Beatnuts, Pete Nice, Stimulated Dummies, and Bosco Money of Downtown Science, entered Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Heatseekers charts. He also appeared on Gravediggaz’ horrorcore landmark 6 Feet Deep the same year, then remained largely absent for an extended period owing to contractual disputes with Columbia. Kurious resurfaced prominently on MF Doom’s solo debut Operation: Doomsday in 1999 and on additional Doom-linked recordings such as KMD’s Black Bastards and King Geedorah’s Take Me to Your Leader; he further belonged to the MF Grimm-founded Monsta Island Czars collective, credited there as Biolante.
After seven years without a single, Kurious returned with “All Great” on Stonegroove Recordings in 2001. Amalgam Entertainment reissued A Constipated Monkey with bonus tracks in 2007 and followed with II in 2009, the latter featuring “Benetton” alongside Doom, 3rd Bass’ MC Serch, and Constipated Monkeys’ Kadi. He also recorded as part of Bamboo Bros with Dave Dar and the supergroup LUV NY, which included Kool Keith, A.G., O.C., and others. A handful of Kurious singles emerged during the 2010s; he issued the limited cassette EP Don’t Know Why with Kool Keith in 2015 and appeared on projects by Juellz and Homeboy Sandman.
Kurious reached unprecedented productivity in the 2020s. Koncrete Jungle, produced by Ro Data and featuring Planet Asia and Homeboy Sandman, arrived via Chong Wizard in 2021. Monkeyman, a collaboration with the Finnish duo Cut Beetlez, surfaced on Weaponize Records in 2023. Majician followed in 2024 on Metalface Records and Rhymesayers Entertainment; long in development, the album was executive-produced by Doom prior to his death and produced by Mono En Stereo, Homeboy Sandman’s frequent collaborator.
