Biography
La Sista carries the moniker of reggaeton’s Mama Inés, a designation that has drawn attention from the moment she entered the genre. In the same spirit as Mama Inés, the formidable female figure drawn from Afro-Caribbean legend, Maidel Amador Canales (La Sista) dismantles entrenched stereotypes while carving out space inside an industry long controlled by men. She originates from Loiza, the northern Puerto Rican town renowned for its deep Afrocentric customs and the island’s highest concentration of black residents. Raised among musicians, Canales counted several male relatives who sustained themselves through performance. Early marginalization followed from her refusal to conform, as she stood among a scant number of women and an equally small number of black artists working in the field. That same pressure fueled relentless effort, which in turn opened professional doors. At nineteen she gained her first public platform on the reality program La Casa Under, an appearance that quickly led to joint work with Domingo Quinoñes, Jerry Rivera, Andy Montañez, and Anais. After signing to Machete Music she issued her debut solo album, Majestad Negroide, in 2006; the project contained the smash hit single “Anacoana,” first recorded by Cheo Feliciano. Her sustained emphasis on African heritage together with an uncompromising sense of self has established her as one of reggaeton’s most closely watched talents.
