Lena Meyer-Landrut, who performs under the shortened name Lena, is a German pop vocalist who captured the Eurovision Song Contest title in 2010 at nineteen with her track “Satellite.” She entered the world on May 23, 1991, in Hanover, Germany, and advanced as one of twenty hopefuls chosen for the broadcast competition Unser Star für Oslo, whose victor would represent the country in Oslo. Across eight weeks she delivered eight English-language covers drawn from Adele’s “My Same,” the Bird and the Bee’s “Diamond Dave,” Kate Nash’s “Foundations” and “Mouthwash,” Paolo Nutini’s “New Shoes,” Lisa Mitchell’s “Neopolitan Dreams,” Jason Mraz’s “Mr. Curiosity,” and the Cure’s “The Lovecats.” At the concluding broadcast she presented three original compositions—“Bee,” “Satellite,” and “Love Me”—and emerged as the victor ahead of runner-up Jennifer Braun. Following her Unser Star für Oslo triumph, the three numbers she had sung that night all entered the German singles chart’s upper tier, with “Satellite” reaching the summit, “Bee” landing at third, and “Love Me” settling at fourth. Still nineteen, she then secured the Eurovision crown with “Satellite,” delivering Germany’s first contest victory since 1982. The song quickly became a widespread commercial success throughout Western Europe, claiming the top position on multiple national charts. Her opening full-length release, My Cassette Player, arrived in 2010 under the guidance of producer Stefan Raab; it led the album rankings in both Germany and Austria while placing inside the Swiss Top Five. The collection revisits several numbers Lena had performed on Unser Star für Oslo—“Satellite,” “Bee,” “Love Me,” and two additional covers—while adding eight previously unheard songs, a portion of which she helped compose. Crystal Sky appeared five years later.
