Biography
Accordionist and lead vocalist Ruben Castillo Juarez, who performs as "el Pinguino mayor," anchors the norteño trio Los Pinguinos del Norte. The group appeared in the mid-'70s documentary Chulas Fronteras and has long hosted a weekly radio broadcast on Piedras Negras station XEMU. Their earliest sessions for Arhoolie Records date to the early '70s, while the 2001 Arhoolie album Trovadores de la Frontera spotlights songs drawn from their home territory of Nuevo Laredo and Piedras Negras.
