Alacranes Musical took shape in November 1999 under the leadership of Emiliano Martinez, who brought the project out of Santa Maria del Oro in Durango. The musicians adopted the name “Scorpion” as a direct nod to the rugged, arid landscape of their home state. Their distinctive fusion of polka, cumbia, and balada first reached listeners on the 2003 debut album Furia Alacranera. By the following year, as duranguense was asserting itself within Regional Mexican music, the group issued A Cambio de Que, which ranked among the year’s strongest Spanish-language sellers—an uncommon achievement for the genre. The 2005 release 100% Originales advanced further, entering Billboard’s Top 200. Throughout this period the band maintained an active itinerary across the United States and Mexico, appearing at dancehalls and festivals with La Banda el Recodo, Los Tigres del Norte, and Ramon Ayala, which expanded their visibility throughout both countries. Issuing roughly two new albums annually, Alacranes Musical surpassed earlier commercial marks with 2006’s A Paso Firme, which reached number one on Billboard’s Regional Mexican chart and returned the act to the Billboard Top 200. The group has sustained that momentum, balancing an intensive touring calendar with ongoing recording for their longtime label, Univision.
