Lovehatehero originated in Burbank, CA, where vocalist Pierrick Berube, guitarists Josh Newman and Mark Johnston, bassist Paris Bosserman, and drummer Bryan Ross assembled the lineup. The members independently tracked their debut album, pitched the recordings to various labels, and ultimately secured a deal with Ferrett Records that resulted in a late-2005 release. The record showcased exceptional metallic emocore primed for widespread appeal. Regular touring followed, with support slots alongside Funeral for a Friend, Eighteen Visions, and He Is Legend plus additional acts. Three members abruptly departed days before the fourth major trek behind the album, and one of them departed with the tour van. Berube and Bosserman refused to disband, instead recruiting drummer Scott Gee and guitarist Myk Russell to resume live performances. A second temporary guitarist also augmented the roster at the time. During a concert in upstate New York, the group encountered guitarist Kevin Gruft, whose local band served as the opener that evening. Once Gruft completed high school, he became a permanent member, prompting the start of work on the next album.
