Rising from Hollywood's subterranean scene, the dark electro-metal duo Luna 13 fuses black metal, bass music, and industrial rock through occult visuals and dramatic stage presentations. The project's architect, after extended time in India, returned to the United States and established the Hollywood-based endeavor under the name Dr. Luna. Its first full-length effort, Phantom Bass Queen—originally conceived as Feeling Like My Old Sunny Self Again—appeared on Halloween 2012. Momentum in the industrial underground led to a 2013 deal with Morbit Records, which issued the compilation Resurrection in Black that same year. Later in 2013 came the India-themed Rakshasi, translated as "female demon," issued domestically on the independent Snake Bite Records imprint. The Empress of Filth, accompanied by the Empress Bee Sides collection, followed in 2014. After delivering the dubstep-tinged A New Kind of Devil, Dr. Luna enlisted singer and dancer Lilith Bathory to intensify the already visceral live presentation.

Their first joint recording, the 2015 album The Hollywood Ripper, wove in grim local allusions to mortality and notorious women including Emily Rose, Marilyn Monroe, and Elisa Lam, who died under mysterious circumstances at a Los Angeles hotel in 2013. Dark Side of the Sun arrived the next year via Cleopatra Records, broadening exposure through festival appearances and placements on both the soundtrack and the film Devil's Domain. The punishing Lilit surfaced in 2017, underscoring the pair's emphasis on crushing drums, droning guitars, and rhythm-driven synth textures. The decade closed with G.O.A.T Witch in 2018 and Wicked Gods in 2019, both released on Cleopatra Records.
