Evidence of the worldwide reach unleashed by Simon Fuller and 19 Entertainment through the 2001 debut season of the British reality show Pop Idol arrived in December 2006, when the third edition of the Swedish version crowned 24-year-old Markus Fagervall its champion. Before the competition began, Fagervall had been entirely unknown; he came from the isolated northern settlement of Overtornea, home to fewer than 2,000 residents and situated above the Arctic Circle along the Finnish frontier, where the prevailing tongue is Meankieli, a regional dialect blending Swedish and Finnish elements. That a performer from such an origin could rise to national prominence confirms Marshall McLuhan’s predictions beyond dispute. Fagervall, whose appearance recalls Matthew McConaughey framed by Joan Jett’s hairstyle, entered the world in Overtornea on October 5, 1982. Slightly more than two decades later he claimed the title with a rendition of Keane’s buoyant pop-rock single “Everything Changes,” which appeared as his debut release almost immediately afterward. His first full-length project, Echo Heart, reached Swedish stores on Christmas Day 2006, scarcely three weeks after his victory, and earned double-platinum status shortly thereafter.
