Biography
Born on January 21, 1981, in Medianeira, Paraná, Brazilian pop singer Michel Teló began performing at age six, taking up the accordion, piano, and harmonica. By twelve he had assembled his initial group, and in 1997 he entered Grupo Tradição, serving as lead vocalist, songwriter, and harmonica player through 2009. During those twelve years the ensemble issued eleven albums and scored repeated commercial triumphs on Brazilian charts. Teló’s primary idiom remained musica sertaneja, the dominant Brazilian sound that has controlled radio playlists and sales since the 1990s with its lyrical melodies, stacked vocal harmonies, and polished arrangements blending acoustic and electronic grooves.
His earliest solo project, the 2009 album Balada Sertaneja, appeared while he was still a member of Grupo Tradição and produced the charting singles “Ei, Psiu! Beijo Me Liga” and “Amanhã Sei Lá.” That release established the pattern of concentrating subsequent output on live recordings. The 2010 concert set Ao Vivo earned gold certification and yielded the Brazilian Hot 100 number-one single “Fugidinha.” Teló formally exited Grupo Tradição in 2008; their final joint effort, Micareta Sertaneja 2, received a Latin Grammy nomination in the Brazilian music field.
International recognition arrived with the 2011 dance track “Ai Se Eu Te Pego!,” originally composed by Sharon Acioly and Antônio Dyggs and already a regional Brazilian success in 2008. The song gained global traction after Brazilian footballer Neymar showcased it in a widely viewed YouTube video, prompting similar celebrations from Spanish players Marcelo Vieira and Cristiano Ronaldo as well as Polish player Adrian Mierzejewski; it later reached number one in more than fifteen territories across Europe, Latin America, and Israel. The accompanying live album Michel Na Balada, which included the hit, earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Sertaneja Album and reached number eleven in Germany, number ten in Austria, and number two in Switzerland.
Further collaborations followed: in 2014 Teló joined bachata star Prince Royce for a Portuguese-language version of “Darte un Beso,” which they debuted at the Premios Billboard Latin Awards. The 2013 gold-certified album Sunset brought another Latin Grammy nomination, while the 2015 compilation Bem Sertanejo was shortlisted in the Best Sertaneja Music Album category at the sixteenth Latin Grammy Awards. Subsequent live projects included the charting 2015 studio date Baile do Teló and 2017’s Bem Sertanejo: O Show.
