Sertaneja duo Rick & Renner took shape in the late 1980s near Brasilia in the Federal District. Rick, born Geraldo Antônio de Carvalho on May 12, 1966, in Monte do Carmo, had previously formed the group Seremp & Serenata with his sister until their father halted her involvement in music. Renner, born Ivair dos Reis Gonçalves on November 19, 1971, in Brasilia, had been performing in local bars alongside a rock band when he stepped in to supply the missing second voice. After some experimentation showed Renner’s voice carried greater distinction, the pair reversed their roles, leaving Rick in the supporting vocal position. They launched their partnership in 1987 and soon attracted the attention of Zezé Di Camargo, whose industry ties secured them a contract with Continental. Their first album, Vol. 1, appeared in 1993. Its romantic and introspective mood demonstrated a keen awareness of listener preferences, which brought radio exposure beyond Brasilia and regional live opportunities. Subsequent volumes—Vol. 2, Vol. 3, and Vol. 4—each reached wider audiences as the duo’s popularity expanded. Instante Magico, issued in 1999, marked their final Continental release before they shifted to the parent label Warner Music. Across an extensive catalog, tracks such as “Ela e Demais” and “Feiticeira” became enduring sertaneja standards and secured the pair’s lasting position within the genre.
