Hailing from Long Island, New York, the progressive metal outfit Moon Tooth fuses hard rock, blues, heavy metal, and soaring neo-prog into a virtuosic sound that calls to mind Mars Volta, Between the Buried and Me, Mastodon, and Intronaut while maintaining a wholly distinctive identity. The quartet came together in 2012 with guitarist Nick Lee, drummer Ray Marte, bassist Vin Romanelli, and vocalist John Carbone, issuing their debut EP Freaks the following year. Their first full-length album, Chromaparagon, arrived in 2016 and earned prominent live support slots with Toothgrinder, Fit for an Autopsy, Astronoid, and the Dillinger Escape Plan. For their second studio release, the alternately punishing and life-affirming Crux, the band joined Modern Static Records in 2019; the album later earned a spot on Rolling Stone’s list of the year’s best records. In 2020 Moon Tooth moved to Pure Noise and, during the COVID-19 pandemic, issued Violent Grief: Acoustic Selections, which featured four unplugged renditions of earlier songs alongside the previously unreleased track “Six of Swords.” That summer the group returned to the road and began composing and debuting fresh material. The eleven-track studio album Phototroph, produced by Josh Wilbur (Lamb of God, Dillinger Escape Plan), followed in May 2022.
