Mowgs

Rapper Mowgs emerged from Birmingham’s streets by shaping a distinct style rooted in traditional U.K. rap. His introduction to audiences arrived via the 2019 project Roll the Dice, after which he secured a U.K. album-chart placement with the 2022 release The Bare Necessities.

Raised in a strict Muslim home by Jamaican and Indian parents who disallowed music, the young Mowgs still managed to catch tracks by 50 Cent and clips from music-television channels. A turbulent domestic environment pushed him toward Birmingham’s housing estates, yet he gravitated to music once friends began making drill beats. The 2017 single “Truth Be Told” quickly accumulated substantial streams, prompting further releases that culminated in his debut mixtape, Roll the Dice. Rather than follow prevailing U.K. drill trends, Mowgs embraced classic British road rap, distinguishing himself among peers. Subsequent singles included the Mist collaboration “Swerve Off,” plus “Lean wit It” and “Delegate.” Those tracks paved the way for The Bare Necessities, which featured Rimzee, SK, and Haze Da Martian and entered the U.K. album charts.
