NOBRO deliver a hefty blast of punk insolence, hard-rock riffs, and garage-rock insolence, embodying the chaotic energy of an impromptu street celebration that spills onto suburban lawns. Their stance blends uncompromising feminism with a disregard for polite conventions, letting glam and hard-rock touches dominate the 2016 EP Stoke Level: High! alongside girl-group harmonies, while a raw punk edge increasingly defined their method by the arrival of 2020’s Sick Hustle. The Canadian quartet pushed that defiant sound further on their first full-length effort, 2023’s Set Your Pussy Free, achieving a leaner, more aggressive attack without losing their cocky stride.
The group coalesced in Toronto during 2014 as a three-piece consisting of lead vocalist and bassist Kathryn McCaughey, guitarist and singer Marianna Florczyk, and drummer and singer Martha Rodriguez. Following the recording of an initial demo in November 2014, they sharpened their skills onstage; Brain Gum Records then issued Stoke Level: High! in 2016, by which point Sarah Dion had replaced Martha Rodriguez behind the kit. Marianna Florczyk exited in 2017, prompting the band to expand into a quartet by adding guitarist and vocalist Gabrielle La Rue plus keyboardist and percussionist Lisandre Bourdages. Album sessions commenced but stalled, leading to Gabrielle La Rue’s departure in 2018 and the enlistment of lead guitarist Karolane Carbonneau.
NOBRO issued the standalone track “LALA” in 2019, then signed with Dine Alone Records in Canada and Big Scary Monsters in the United Kingdom, resulting in the four-song EP Sick Hustle drawn from the shelved full-length recordings. After releasing a flexi-disc single on which they covered Betty Davis’s “Game Is My Middle Name,” the band delivered the EP Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar, helmed by producer Thomas D’Arcy. Between studio dates they maintained a busy touring schedule, appearing alongside Fidlar, PUP, the Distillers, Billy Talent, Tokyo Police Club, and blink-182. In October 2023 the long-awaited debut album Set Your Pussy Free finally emerged on Dine Alone, produced by Dave Schiffman.
