Biography
Chicago-based producer, keyboardist, and musical director Peter Cottontale first gained notice through his membership in the Social Experiment, the live ensemble tied to Chance the Rapper, and through his close studio partnership with the rapper himself. Those behind-the-scenes contributions on early independent releases gradually led to production and performance credits alongside SZA, Lil Wayne, J. Cole, and Skrillex. In 2018 he stepped forward with his own material, releasing the buoyant single “Forever Always,” which featured Chance, Daniel Caesar, Yebba, and additional guests.
Before adopting the Cottontale name, he worked as Peter Wilkins, a multi-instrumentalist from the Chicago area whose primary focus was keyboards yet who also produced and performed on numerous other instruments. His first documented link with Chance the Rapper came when he supplied portions of the 2012 mixtape 10 Day. That association deepened once the Social Experiment formed, placing Wilkins on keyboards in the band that regularly supported the rapper in live settings. Outside those Chance-related projects, Wilkins contributed production to Vic Mensa’s 2013 mixtape INNANETAPE, vocals to Skrillex’s 2014 album Recess, and additional composition to SZA’s 2017 album Ctrl. Throughout the same period he continued developing solo work, culminating in the summer 2018 release of “Forever Always.”
